The quintessential noble hop: welcome in any Continental ale or lager style.
Specific aroma descriptors include distinctive honeydew melon and strawberry.
Additional Information
Bred at the Hop Research Institute in Hüell, this hop variety has bold flavors and is not necessarily associated with typical hop variety aromas.
Domestic Saaz Hops
Characteristics
Saaz is a very traditional aroma hop that has been grown in the Czech Republic for centuries. It is classified as one of the four true Noble varieties. Alpha acids are low (around 3 to 4.5% AAU) and its primary use is for its distinct mild spice aroma and mild flavor. The saaz aroma can be described best as spicy, clean, classic and noble.
Saaz hops are the defining element for the classic Pilsner Urquell and Budìjovice Budweiser beers, and are a welcome addition to any light lager, pale ale, and even the wit style.
Origin: Germany. A daughter of Cascade released in 2012 and bred specifically to answer the needs of American craft beer styles.
Usage: Aroma, particularly whirlpool and dry hopping to take full advantage of the very high myrcene fraction. With its pronounced tropical profile, Hallertau Blanc has strong affinity for many of the same styles as southern hemisphere hops: IPA, Belgian ales, wheat beer, and Brett fermentations.
Northern Brewer Hop Pellets
Characteristics
Northern Brewer hops are a dual-purpose variety reminiscent of Hallertau but with a bit higher AAU. Northern Brewer can be described as Woody, Piney, Earthy, Minty, and somewhat Rustic ... which is not to say coarse or undefined necessarily. Northern Brewer is the signature hop in Anchor Steam and typifies the California Common not-quite-ale/not-quite-lager style.
There are both U.S. and German varieties available.
